Bio

My name is Alex Foltz. I was born in Vermont, and spent most of my childhood in the small town of Highgate in the Champlain Valley. I first began exploring art as a simple hobby during my early years of elementary school. Although it didn't mean much to me at the time, the people around me quickly recognized a talent. My school encouraged the growth of my skill, and by my first grade year I'd been entered in a national Duck Stamp Drawing contest. Although I didn't place in the contest, it was a large step in the right direction: It was the first push to encourage me to become a better artist.

In the following years I was inspired by my family, especially by my step father who is an artist himself, and encouraged  by my mother to continue with my art. The more I drew, The more my skills improved and Vice Versa, until I stood out as an artist in my community. In my early teenage years I developed a very strong interest in portraiture, which has become my most successful field of work. I discovered that not only was I fascinated by the practice of recreating somebody's image in a way most have never seen before, but that I had quite a knack for it. Soon after, it was brought to my attention that people were both interested in having me draw portraits for them, and willing to pay me to do it. That marked a transition in my life: it was when I decided that I wanted to pursue art as a career and not just as a hobby.

Since then I have sold dozens of portraits and other artworks, and explored new media and methods to create. My artwork has been showcased in various areas of South Carolina, displayed in local newspapers, and even published as illustrations a short collection of poems entitled Mulberry Wine by Amy Jenkins Bassett. I am always looking for new ways to improve and open up to new ideas and styles of art.

As of recent my hopes for making art a bigger, more important part of my life have seemed to fade. I was accepted into my choice art college for a degree in illustration, but financial issues postponed any further progress. For a while I was out of touch with my art, which had been such a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, and recently I've decided to make a change. This site is the next step for me. Through this site I hope to expand my knowledge and skill, while spreading awareness about myself and my craft.
